Silent Night

Silent Night

Each of their breaths
while almost silent,
speak uncountable words,
     for those that know the song.

Quiet tears, heavy sighs
mumbled prayers while asleep,
for deliverance,
     from demons
  or from demons, even.

The stains left behind 
     from the evening’s repose
I shall only guess at origins
     acidic tears, poison fluids, some with orts still attached
and times more solid than dreams.

The slow shuffle of feet,
the slower eyelids
hesitant to greet the day
will return to roost
with the setting of the sun

to once again raise a chorus
     of silence that screams.
